About Me

My name is Ailén and my editing career started in elementary school. After a brief love affair with comic books I graduated to novels, and word got out that my incessant reading could help improve my classmates' grades. By the time I was in high school, there was usually a modest pile of friends' essays on my desk, which I would edit all through biology and gym class. During graduate school, essays gave way to articles, grant applications, and books in both English and Spanish, as well as C.V.'s, résumés, and cover letters.

Editing helps me connect with people, what matters to them, and their message to the world. Reading others' writing offers me the opportunity to learn about new topics, the relevant issues in their fields, and their potential solutions. I find great fulfillment in helping others improve and clarify a message and reach their desired audience.

Although my background is in the humanities and social sciences, I have edited work for those in the natural sciences, engineering, and health, as well as those writing with more general business and marketing needs.

I hold an M.A. and Ph.D. in literature, and have taught language, linguistics, literature, and translation courses at the University of Toronto and the Australian National University. I have supervised work at the M.A. and Ph.D. level and published in Spanish and English in academic and non-academic venues. I am the copyeditor and Spanish translator for Imago Mundi journal, and I write a weekly bilingual newsletter, Prone to Hyperbole. When I'm not shuffling piles of books around my apartment, I can be found rock climbing with my partner, wrestling our curiously strong Shiba Inu, and trying to perfect the elusive macaron.
